The Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art is an international institution in the contemporary art scene and the only state funded Biennale in Greece. The Thessaloniki Biennale contributes to the strengthening and internationalisation of the Greek art scene, functions as a hub for the city's artistic forces and the promotion of Thessaloniki as an international cultural destination and a cradle of art and innovation; moreover, it highlights the central role of culture in the development of the country and aspires to be a meeting point for creative forces and a celebration open to all citizens.

In an era characterised by global crises, technological transitions and cultural upheavals every Biennale –international art exhibitions that usually take place every two years– remain vibrant and essential platforms for artistic expression and intercultural dialogue. Although they are not without challenges –such as overcrowding, commercialisation or unequal representation– they maintain their role as hubs of experimentation, collectivity and cultural change. Through bold thematic frameworks and the participation of creators from different social and geographical fields, they highlight the potential of art to function as a tool for understanding and transforming the contemporary condition.

Since the establishment of the Thessaloniki Biennale in 2007 by the then State Museum of Contemporary Art, the organisation has enjoyed the support of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture overtime; along the way, the Thessaloniki Biennale has transformed into different institutional formats, with the cooperation-support of different bodies, foundations and individuals, while since 2011 it has been integrated into European co-funded programmes. Since 2018, the Metropolitan Organisation of Museums of Visual Arts of Thessaloniki, MOMUS, has been the organising body of the Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art, with the implementing body being MOMUS-Museum of Contemporary Art-Collections of the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art and the State Museum of Contemporary Art.

The organisation remains the living field where art dialogues with the world, without geographical or social boundaries, where experimentation, cultural and cultural change have an important place.
